East Africa

Regional Branding, Cultural Visual Identity System, Font Design

This project imagines an aspirational brand identity for East Africa, celebrating shared culture across borders. To highlight lesser-known aspects of the region, I developed four categories: tribes, crafts, architecture, and cuisine. Each informed a modular pattern-based typeface and color system, creating a cohesive identity that connects culture, craft, and community.

Logo

I created the logo to feel like a simple gesture that reveals more of itself over time. At first glance it reads as an “E,” then an “A.” As you follow the form, it begins with “A” and returns to “E,” holding both East Africa and Africa in one continuous shape. Paired with One Home Many Paths, it reflects a shared home made up of many different journeys.

Color Palette

I used four core colors to represent tribes, crafts, architecture, and cuisine, supported by a primary and secondary palette that carries the identity across different applications.

Typography & Patterns

To reflect the idea of uniting East Africa, I grouped countries across the four categories and developed patterns based on each. Some countries appear more than once, allowing the system to feel layered and interconnected rather than fixed.

Identity Posters

To showcase the patterns, I created two variations. One focuses on the patterns themselves, while the other highlights the typeface and how it comes together as a system.

Content Posters

These posters highlight different aspects within each category, including places, festivals, tribes, crafts, and cuisine, bringing more visibility to the region’s cultural depth.
